Areas
to Visit in Croatia - Dubrovnik (South Dalmatian Coast)
Dubrovnik,
famously known as the "Pearl of the Adriatic" is
a magical city which was once described by George Bernard
Shaw as "Heaven on Earth", a description that most
visitors would agree on. This magnificent city offers exceptional
beauty and rich cultural heritage , and has now gained UNESCO
world heritage status.
Founded in the 13th century, this beautiful preserved fortified
city is now a graceful living metropolis which combines rustic
charm and elegance. Mighty encircling walls, ramparts and
fortresses protect a treasure trove of architectural masterpieces.
Baroque, Gothic and Renaissance churches, palaces, museums
and fountains mingle with a sea of frescoed villas and a patchwork
of pan-tiled roofs. Visitors are delighted with the labyrinth
of old cobbled alleyways overhung with unfuled linen, lanterns
and banners, revealing hidden Piazzas complete with tinkling
fountains.
The Placa, the city's bustling promenade, complete with a
well-polished marbled walkway is lined with many shops, bars
and al fresco cafes shaded by umbrellas. It is a perfect location
to simply relax with an Italian-influenced coffee, admire
the magnificent architectute and watch the world go by. However,
with this spirited city, time does not stand still and the
evenings come alive with the sounds of music and theatre.
The famous Dubrovnik summer festival in July and August, usually
brings over 80 performances of opera, ballet, clasical concerts,
poetry and art exhibitions.
A pleasant walk around the ancient walls is an absolute must.
The 2 km walk will let you circle the whole of the old town
and reward you with the most superb views. Various towers
and bastions punctuate the walls, but its the 1455 Minceta
fortress that is the most imposing.
The city has grown well beyond its ancient walls and it is
possible to catch a boat from the old jetty to the wooded
island of Locrum or to the Elafti islands complete with rocky
beaches and scented pine woods, a favourite spot for holiday
makers. Nearby is the commercial harbour of Gruz, which is
home to many cruise liners, ferries and "gin palaces".
It is not unusual to see up to three massive cruise liners
moored at any one time in the turquoise straights along the
old town.
A sence of history seems to ooze from every part of this
proud seaport and fairytale city which will surely find a
place in every sightseer's heart.
