Areas
to Visit in Croatia - Viganj,
Kuciste & Loviste (Peljesac Peninsula)
The
picturesque village of Viganj is situated on the road to Loviste,
8 km from the town of Orebic and is well known for its rich
maritime traditions and more famously known as being the windsurfing
capital of Croatia.
Viganj is lined with impressive sea captians houses and the
village has transformed itself into a wonderful orchard and
botanical garden. There are a good selection of waterfront
reastaurants and bars and the village also boasts a long white
pebbly beach which makes it an ideal location for family holidays.
The "maestral" breeze that runs through the Korcula
and Peljesac channel in the summer months is unique. The daily
breeze creates the perfect conditions for windsurfers and
kitesurfers. Each year, the National Championships are held
in Vaganj every year in the last two weeks of July. Viganj
was host to the World Championship in windsurfing in 1989
and to the European Championship in 1990.
Scuba diving is also very popular in Viganj and highlights
include a U-boat in the local waters and various flora and
fauna. Dive centres are located nearby and equipment can be
hired locally.
Not far from Viganj, (about 10 mins by bus) is the "Cave
Nakovana" recently discovered in the year 1999. The Illyrian
shrine has been traced back to the Hellenistic period (4th
to 1st century B.C.). The only "sealed"cave site
in Croatia became a World sensation in archaeological circles.
Also located near to Viganj is the mountain excursion point
for Mt. Illija (961m) which is ideal for hiking, extreme cycling
and paragliding.
Kuciste (Peljesac Peninsula)
The quaint village of Kuciste is situated on the Road to
Loviste, 6 km from the town of Orebic. Also rich in maritime
traditions, this beautiful village reveals the harmony of
sacred medieval architecture. The village is lined by many
sea captains houses, stairways and terraced gardens full of
luxuriant foliage and exotic trees.
The small chapel of the Holy Trinity (1752), contains an
impressive facade showing a strong Venetian influence and
surpasses many other examples. It is claimed to be the most
luxurious 18th century Baroque mausoleum in Dalmatia.
Kuciste and its pretty harbour is dotted with local fishing
boats and unusual pillar-box boat sheleters called "Vlake"
Loviste (Peljesac Peninsula)
Loviste is a delightful fishing village, situated approximately
15 km from Orebic on the North West tip of the Peljesac Peninsula.
With a population of around 250 people, the village is well
known for its fishing and large processing plant for drying
figs, almonds and locusts.
Loviste boasts a large pebbly beach and numerous unspoilt
small coves. Visitors will especially enjoy bathing in the
cove of Mirca complete with white sandy beach.
Along the pretty harbour, there are fleets of local fishing
boats. The local people take pride in their freshly caught
fish and seafood. It is recommended that tourists visit one
of excellent fish restaurants along the seafront, where one
can appreciate the wonderful cuisine and admire the unique
location which is known for its amazing sunsets.
