The cuisine of Dalmatia, is essentially Mediterranean, which
features an abundance of homemade olive oil, garlic and herbs.
The local produce is grown organically. Many of the islands
produce their own delicious cheese, Pag which is often served
with olives and fresh bread as an appetizer, as is Dalmation
smoked ham called Prsut, believed by many, to be superior
to its Italian rival, Parma ham.
Beef, pork, veal, lamb and chicken are also excellent, as
are pizza and pasta, which can be found in most restaurants.
Many restaurants feature a roasted lamb on the spit in summer
months, and a local speciallity which must be sampled, is
food cooked "Under the Bell", which consists of
a meat of your choice, slowly cooked with potatoes, garlic
and olive oil. The large round pan is covered by a lid and
smothered with hot ashes. The delicious dish is served with
fresh bread and salad.
Seafood is highly recommended in Dalmatia. There is an abundance
of freshly caught fish daily, which includes White fish, octopus,
lobster, crab, langoustines, mussels, sardines and many more.
The Peljesac Peninsula is famous as being the producer of
Croatia’s finest wines. The soil and an abundance of
Dalmatian sun result in famous, quality local red wines such
as Dingac, Postup and Peljesac. The white wines such as Posip
and Grk from the island of Korcula, are also excellent.
